Alan Murphy
I qualified in 1990 and spent sixteen years in mixed practice, concentrating on livestock species in the Northwest of England. I was awarded a Diploma in Bovine Reproduction (DBR) during this time. I left practice in 2006 to join the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) now the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA); as a Veterinary Investigation Officer (VIO). This enabled me to pursue a career in diagnostic pathology and disease investigation. I have studied for further qualification with the support of the APHA and was awarded a MSc in Applied Toxicology (Distinction) from Surrey University. As I was based at Sutton Bonington originally with the VLA I became involved with undergraduate teaching at the newly established Nottingham Vet School. I have only recently stepped down from my role as Clinical Assistant Professor in Farm Animal Veterinary Pathology at the School. This part time post utilised my VIO knowledge and allowed me to indulge my enthusiasm for teaching.
